Esa Lindell (born May 23, 1994 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League since May 2014 . With the Finnish national team , the defender won the silver medal at the 2016 World Cup .

Career

Lindell began his career in Tikkurila , a district of Vantaa near his native Helsinki. The defender then moved to Jokerit's youth department , where he won the Finnish championship of his age group twice with the U16 team. As a 17-year-old Lindell played his first full season for the U20 team in 2011/12 and led the top Finnish junior league as the highest point defender. He was then awarded the Teemu Selänne trophy as the best player of the season. In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , Lindell was selected by the Dallas Stars in the third round in a total of 74th position.

After making his debut for Jokerit in the SM-liiga in the 2012/13 season , the defender signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars in May 2014 . However, he initially stayed in Finland, where he moved to Porin Ässät after transferring from Jokerit in the KHL . With an average of almost 25 minutes of ice time per game, he was the most frequently used player in the league and ended the 2014/15 season as the defender with the highest points. His 14 goals were also the best in the league for a defender. Eventually, Lindell was awarded the Pekka Rautakallio Trophy as the best defender of the regular season.

For the 2015/16 season , Lindell moved to North America and played in his debut season mainly for the farm team of the Dallas Stars, the Texas Stars , in the American Hockey League . On January 19, 2016, he played his first game in the National Hockey League (NHL) against the Los Angeles Kings . In the course of the following seasons, the Finn established himself in the NHL line-up of stars and at the same time advanced to one of the best defenders of the team alongside John Klingberg and his compatriot Miro Heiskanen . As a result, he signed a new six-year contract in Dallas in May 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of $ 5.8 million from the start of the 2019/20 season.

International

Lindell was at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2011 in Liberec for the Finnish U17 selection and won the silver medal with them. At the U18 Junior World Championships in 2012 , he reached fourth place with Finland and was the best assist provider of his team with six assists alongside Teuvo Teräväinen and Henrik Haapala .

After leading the U19 selection as team captain last year , Lindell was also nominated for the 2014 U20 World Junior Championship . He finished the tournament with five points from seven games, helping Finland win the gold medal. He then played a total of 19 appearances for the men's national team in the 2014/15 season, including the 2015 World Cup , where one of the three best players in the Finnish squad was chosen. At the following World Cup in 2016 , Lindell was also part of the Finnish squad and won the silver medal with the team. He also represented his home country a little later at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
