Career

Youth and University

Stephen Johns was born in Ellwood City and attended Lincoln High School there , but grew up in Wampum, a few miles away . In his youth, the defender played for the Pittsburgh Hornets , among others , before he was accepted into the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP) at the beginning of the 2008/09 season , the central talent factory of the US Association in Ann Arbor , Michigan . With the teams of the NTDP he took part in the game operations of the North American Hockey League and the United States Hockey League , the two highest junior leagues in the United States, in the following two years . In addition, the selections of the NTDP also act as junior national teams, so that he won the gold medal with the U18 of his home country at the U18 World Cup in 2010 .

After two years, Johns retired due to old age from the NTDP and was selected in the following NHL Entry Draft 2010 in 60th position by the Chicago Blackhawks . He then began studying at the University of Notre Dame in autumn 2010 , which he completed in 2014 with a degree in marketing . At the same time, he took part in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's ice hockey team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish , and won the Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship with the team in 2013 . The year before, he had taken part in the 2012 U20 World Cup with the US U20 national team, but only finished seventh there. In his senior year the Fighting Irish changed the conference, so that he could be elected to the Second All-Star Team of Hockey East in 2014.

National Hockey League

As a result, Johns signed an entry-level contract with the Blackhawks in April 2014 , who use him until the end of the 2013/14 season with their farm team , the Rockford IceHogs , in the American Hockey League (AHL). The defender also spent the entire 2014/15 season in Rockford, in which he scored 21 points in 51 games and led the league (together with three other players) with plus / minus statistics of +30. Without having played a game for the Blackhawks, Johns and Patrick Sharp were handed over to the Dallas Stars in July 2015 , who in return sent Trevor Daley and Ryan Garbutt to Chicago.

The stars also sent Johns to their AHL farm team, the Texas Stars , but appointed him to their NHL squad for the first time in March 2016, so that he made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a little later and made 27 appearances by the end of the season , 13 of them in the playoffs. As part of the preparation for the 2016/17 season, Johns was able to confirm his regular place in the stars' squad and has been there regularly since then. In June 2018, he signed a new three-year contract in Dallas that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 2.35 million. However, he completely missed the following 2018/19 season due to a head injury.
