Andrej Sekera (born June 8, 1986 in Bojnice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Andrej Sekera began his career in the youth teams of HC Dukla Trenčín , for which he played in the junior leagues of Slovakia until 2004. In the 2003/04 season he also made his debut in the Slovak Extra League for Trenčín. During the NHL Entry Draft 2004 he was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the third round in a total of 71st place and then moved in the summer of 2004 to the Owen Sound Attack from the Ontario Hockey League .

This was followed by two very successful years in the OHL for Sekera, in which he was appointed to the All- Rookie Team in 2005 and to the All-Star Team in 2006 . He was also awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy , which is awarded to the outstanding defender of the OHl. In July 2006, Sekera signed his first contract with the Buffalo Sabers, which ties him to the franchise for three years . The season 2006/07 he completed with the farm team of the Sabers, the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . He also made his NHL debut with the Sabers, but only came to two NHL games. In the following season, defenders of the Sabers fell out due to injury, so that Sekera was regularly appointed to the NHL squad and was used in a total of 37 season games. He scored his first NHL goal on November 28, 2007 against the goalkeeper of the St. Louis Blues , Manny Legace . For the 2008/09 season Sekera received a regular place in the defense of the Sabers after the departure of other defenders.

In late June 2013, Sekera was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Jamie McBain and a second-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . The defender stayed there for almost a year and a half before the Los Angeles Kings signed him in exchange for Roland McKeown and a first-round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . In Los Angeles, Sekera only stayed until the end of the season, when he signed a six-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers in July 2015 .

In June 2019, his contract, which was still running for two years, was paid out early (buy-out) . In early July 2019, he signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Stars as a free agent .

International

Andrej Sekera represented the Slovak national junior team at three world championships: 2004 , 2005 and 2006 . In 2006, he led Slovakia's junior selection as team captain .

With the senior team , the defender played the World Championships in 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2012 , 2013 , 2016 , 2018 and 2019 as well as the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi . He also represented the Europe team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where he finished second with the team.
