Francesinha com ovo

Francesinha ( Portuguese : little French woman ) is the name of a Portuguese sandwich that originally came from Porto . It consists of toasted bread, boiled ham, linguiça (similar to chouriço ), beef steak or fried beef and is poured with melted cheese and a hot, typically thick sauce made from tomatoes, beer and mustard. In many cases, the sauce is refined with brandy and white wine ( Vinho Verde ).

Types of preparation

Although there is no standard way of preparing it, a francesinha is typically served with french fries . In addition to the typical ingredients made from red meat , especially in special Francesinha restaurants, you will also find preparations with poultry or fish as well as vegetarian variations with mushrooms and vegetables. In addition, a fried egg can lie on the Francesinha, which is then baked with the cheese ( Francesinha com ovo ).

origin

The origin of the sandwich is not clear. In 2010, the Portuguese daily Diário de Notícias published an article in which Daniel David da Silva from Terras de Bouro was presented as the inventor of Francesinha. After stays abroad in Belgium and France, he returned to Portugal and changed the French croque in a spicy way. The name was chosen by him in allusion to the "piquant" French women. According to another hypothesis, the name goes back to the Napoleonic troops.
