With Sweden, the host nation won the tournament for the first time since 1986. Its final opponent Switzerland won a medal at a world championship tournament for the first time in 60 years. The German national team finished ninth and thus just missed reaching the quarter-finals. Participants, venues and periods

mode

In the top division, the four best teams in each group qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The mode is intended to give preference to the teams that play most consistently in the course of the preliminary round. Qualification for the intermediate round can no longer be dependent on just one game. The total number of games is 64 games.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams will continue to be qualitatively divided into two groups of six teams. This is done on the basis of the final placements of the World Championships in 2012 .

Division III will continue to play in a group of six teams, with an optional qualification depending on the number of registered participants.

The last two of the two preliminary round groups are relegated from the top division to Division IA. For the same reason, the first two will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth placed will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applies to divisions II A and II B. There is no direct relegated from Division III. Depending on the registration of new national teams, the last two teams placed in Division III of the previous year as well as the newly registered nations must compete in the qualification in order to play out the two free places.

With Sweden, the host nation won the tournament for the first time since 1986 (Russia). Its final opponent Switzerland won a medal at a world championship tournament for the first time in 60 years (1953).

Award

Initially, five nations applied to host the 2013 World Cup - Sweden , Belarus , Hungary , the Czech Republic and Latvia . The latter had withdrawn its candidacy before the vote and supported the Swedish application.

The World Cup was awarded to Sweden with 73% of the vote. At the IIHF annual meeting in 2009, IIHF, Finland and Sweden announced that the two countries would jointly host the tournaments of the years 2012 , which were given to Finland, and 2013, respectively.

The venues are the capitals Helsinki and Stockholm . Helsinki has already hosted six World Cup tournaments. Stockholm has already hosted the world title fights nine times. Originally, the venues Stockholm, with the Globen (13,850 spectators), and Malmö with the multifunctional Malmö Arena (12,500 spectators), completed in 2008, were planned for a purely Swedish event .

mode

The 17-day world championship tournament was divided into two phases - the preliminary round and the final round.

The 16 teams were playing on their world rankings placing first in two groups of eight teams, a preliminary round ( Preliminary Round ). Three points were awarded for a win after normal playing time of 60 minutes, two for a win in the five-minute extra time or in the penalty shootout and one point for a defeat in the extra time or in the penalty shootout. In the event of a tie between two teams, the direct comparison decided. If more than two teams had tied, the following criteria would have decided:

  1. Number of points from matches between teams with the same points against each other
  2. better goal difference from the games against each other,
  3. Number of goals from the games against each other
  4. Points, goal difference and goals against the next-better, non-tied team (if possible),
  5. Results against the team that is better but not tied (if possible),
  6. Placement in the IIHF world rankings of 2012.

If only two teams had tied on points according to one of these criteria, the direct comparison would have decided again.

The four best teams in each preliminary group qualified for the quarter-finals and played the medal winners in the knockout system with the following semi-finals and finals ( playoff round ). The nations on the bottom of the respective group were relegated to Division IA. Since Belarus was set to host the 2014 World Cup, the penultimate nation of the two groups with the poorer record would have been relegated in the event of a sporting relegation.

Final round

The final round began after the preliminary round on May 16, 2013, so that all teams had at least one day of rest. Two of the quarter-finals were played in Helsinki, the other two in Stockholm. The games took place within the preliminary round groups, so there was no cross comparison this year either. From the semi-finals on May 18, all the encounters took place in Stockholm. The final and the bronze match were scheduled for May 19th.

The group A tournament was held from April 14th to 20th, 2013 in the Hungarian capital Budapest . The games took place in the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna with a capacity of almost 10,000 spectators . A total of 52,533 spectators attended the 15 tournament games.

With a record of four wins and one defeat in five games, Italy and Kazakhstan, two relegated from last year, managed to return to the top division. Even before the final game day with the direct duel against each other, the Italians were sure of promotion, while the Kazakhs had to beat Italy to achieve the tournament victory and promotion. This was achieved with a 3-0 victory. Third place went to hosts Hungary with ten points. The relegation to Division IB had to accept Great Britain , which lost all five tournament games.
