Matthew "Matt" Carle (born September 25, 1984 in Anchorage , Alaska ) is a retired American ice hockey player . The defender played 857 games in the National Hockey League for the San Jose Sharks , Tampa Bay Lightning , Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators . With the national teams of his home country, he won gold medals at the U18 and U20 junior world championships and the bronze medal at the 2013 men's world championships .
Career
Carle first played in the 2001/02 and 2002/03 seasons in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program of the US Ice Hockey Federation and the River City Lancers in the United States Hockey League . In the summer of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round in 47th place by the San Jose Sharks . After he had finished the 2005-06 season with the University of Denver , his third season at college, and received the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best college player of the year, he signed a professional shortly before the end of the regular season Contract with the Sharks. Carle scored his first goal in his first game against the Minnesota Wild . He was the tenth player in Sharks history to do so.
During the 2006/07 season Carle became a fixture in San José and played a leading role in the power play game. After weaker performance in December 2006, he was sent on January 2, 2007 in the American Hockey League to the Worcester Sharks , the farm team of San Jose. After only three games for Worcester, he returned to San Jose on January 12 and was able to mark a goal on his comeback in Phoenix. In addition, Carle was nominated for the YoungStars Game, which took place in the framework of the NHL All-Star Game , and was one of four defenders for the Western Conference team . He finished his first full NHL season as the rookie defender with the best points in the entire league, with a large margin over the runner-up. This earned him the election to the NHL All-Rookie Team . He could not repeat the performances from the previous season in the 2007/08 season . Due to many mistakes in the defensive game and a significant deterioration in the offensive area, the defender came under increasing criticism and also temporarily lost his regular place after he had received a well-paid new contract in the summer of 2007. As a result, he was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the course of a change in the Sharks defensive together with Ty Wishart and two draft picks for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich . However, this parted only a few games in the 2008/09 season from him when they gave him to the Philadelphia Flyers together with one of the two draft picks received from San Jose for Steve Eminger and Steve Downie .
Carle then spent four seasons with the Flyers before rejoining the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer of 2012, which provided him with a six-year contract. In June 2016, however, the Lightning bought him out of his remaining two years of contract (buy-out) , so that he signed a one-year contract with the Nashville Predators in July of the same year . For the Predators, Carle completed six NHL appearances until November 2016, before the defender announced the end of his playing career and had his contract in Nashville terminated early.
International
Carle played for the US national team at the 2002 U18 World Junior Championship and the 2004 U20 World Junior Championship by being in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program . At both tournaments Carle was able to win the gold medal with the respective team.
At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was in the men's national team for the first time and won the bronze medal with it.
