Daniel Denis "Dan" Boyle (born July 12, 1976 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1100 games for the Florida Panthers , Tampa Bay Lightning , San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Boyle celebrated his greatest success by winning the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada and winning the Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning. In addition, the offensive defender was appointed to the NHL Second All-Star Team twice in 2007 and 2009 .

Career

Boyle played during his junior years first from 1991 on with the Gloucester Rangers in the Canadian junior league Central Junior Hockey League . In the summer of 1994 he accepted a scholarship from Miami University . There he played alongside his studies for the university team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In total, the Canadian stayed at the university for four years. In his rookie season he achieved 26 points scorer in 35 games. In the following two years he was able to increase his points yield. At the end of the 1996/97 season he had 54 points in 40 games, a value that he could not beat even in his fourth and final year of college . In the last two seasons he has received several appointments in various all-star teams of the CCHA and NCAA.

After the end of the NCAA season, the defender moved undrafted to the professional field. He was signed by the Florida Panthers from the National Hockey League , who used him for the remainder of the game year in their farm team in the International Hockey League , the Cincinnati Cyclones . In the 1998/99 season , the Panthers put the Canadian in the American Hockey League with the Kentucky Thoroughblades . There he played an outstanding season with 42 points in 53 games, which was rewarded with the appointment to the AHL All-Star Classic , the AHL All-Rookie Team and AHL Second All-Star Team and the debut for the Panthers in the NHL. He finally made the final leap into the NHL roster in the 2000/01 season . After Boyle the 2000/01 season and the first half of the game 2001/02 had spent with the Panthers, the offensive strong defenders within the state was Florida for a draft pick of the fifth round of the NHL Entry Draft in 2003 to league rivals Tampa Bay Lightning transferred. In Tampa, Boyle's game reached a new level in the 2002–03 season . The Canadian posted 53 points in 77 games after the previous high of 22 points scorer dated from his rookie year with the Panthers. The following year he also improved his game on the defensive and surprisingly won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning at the end of the 2003/04 season . During the finals, Boyle involuntarily hit the headlines when his house was damaged by fire of $ 300,000 due to an electrical short circuit.

The following year, which was marked by the lockout of the NHL season 2004/05 , Boyle spent in the Swedish Elitserien at Djurgårdens IF , with which he could advance to the playoff semifinals. For the game year 2005/06 he returned to Tampa, where his development to one of the best offensive defenders in the league continued. This earned him a nomination for the NHL Second All-Star Team in the 2006/07 season . Shortly before the start of the 2007/08 season, the Canadian injured his left wrist when an ice skate fell from his locker. The skid severed three tendons that had to be put back together in an operation in September. However, when an MRI showed that two tendons had not grown back together properly, Boyle had to undergo another operation in November, which forced him to take a break until the end of January 2008. After his comeback he quickly gained a foothold again, but could not prevent the Lightning from ending the season as the worst team in the entire league. Although he had only extended his expiring contract in February 2008 by six years for a total of 40 million US dollars, he had a clause deleted from the same in July 2008 that was supposed to protect him from a transfer deal. A little later he moved with Brad Lukowich to the San Jose Sharks , which in return received Matt Carle , Ty Wishart and a first-round and fourth-round draft pick, as the Lightning franchise was in upheaval after the weak season and a change of ownership.

Boyle's move paid off for both himself and the San Jose Sharks. With strong help from him, the Sharks set a new NHL starting record after 30 games this season, and he himself was one of the best-scoring defenders in the league during the half of the season. This earned him his first invitation to the NHL All-Star Game . After six years with the Sharks, he was handed over to the New York Islanders in June 2014 in exchange for a right to vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , with whom Boyle was subsequently unable to agree on a contract. He thus joined the New York Rangers as a free agent in July 2014 . There he completed his 1000th game in the NHL during the 2014/15 season. After the 2015/16 season , he ended his active career in October 2016 at the age of 40.

International

Boyle took part in the 2005 Ice Hockey World Championship with the Canadian national team. There he won the silver medal after a final defeat against the Czech Republic . In addition, he was in the provisional squad for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , but ultimately could not assert himself against the strong competition and was only a reserve player in the squad. He was also invited to the preparatory training camp for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver as one of 46 players in the summer of 2009 . After the final announcement of the roster on December 30, 2009, he was also part of the squad and won the gold medal at the end of the tournament.
