Career
Leopold was selected in the second round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in 44th place by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . In 2002 he received the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best male college player . In the same year he also made his debut for the US national team .
Although he was drafted in 1999, he did not play his first NHL game until the 2002/03 season . That season he played 58 games for the Calgary Flames and scored 14 points, including four goals. In the second season with the Flames, he completed all 82 games in the regular season and reached the playoffs of the NHL for the first time, where they only lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup final . On June 24, 2006 he moved to Denver to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange with Alex Tanguay . The Avalanche received from Calgary for Tanguay not only Leopold but also a draft pick for the second round in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 and another draft pick for the second round in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 .
In Colorado he played 122 games and scored 38 points, including 13 goals, before being transferred back to Calgary on March 4, 2009, the day of the Trade Deadline , in exchange for defenders Lawrence Nycholat and Ryan Wilson and a second-round draft pick . In his first game for his new team, he scored a goal in a 5-1 win against the Philadelphia Flyers . However, he only stayed in the Canadian ice hockey metropolis until the end of the season, as he was given in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 together with a third-round draft right to the Florida Panthers . In return, the Flames received primary contract negotiation rights for free agent defender Jay Bouwmeester . In the 2009/10 season , Leopold completed 61 games for the Florida Panthers and scored seven goals and 18 assists in these.
On May 1, 2010, the US defender was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a second-round vote in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft . At the playoffs, Leopold only took part in one complete game in the first series. In the second game between the Penguins and the Ottawa Senators , which took place on April 16, 2010, the defender remained motionless on the ice for several seconds after a body check by player Andy Sutton . He returned to the second game of the Conference semi-finals after a shorter recovery period.
On July 1, 2010, the Buffalo Sabers signed Jordan Leopold as a free agent. On March 30, 2013, he was transferred to the St. Louis Blues . He stayed there until November 2014, when the Blues handed him over to the Columbus Blue Jackets and in return received a five-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft .
In Columbus, Leopold only stayed a few months until he moved to the Minnesota Wild in March 2015 in exchange for Justin Falk and a five-round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . There Leopold ended the season, but received no new contract. Then he ended his active career.
