John "Jack" Eichel (born October 28, 1996 in Chelmsford , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League since July 2015 . The center was selected in second position by the Sabers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has led the team as team captain since October 2018 .

Career

youth

Jack Eichel started ice skating at the age of three and played organized ice hockey for the first time at the age of four. He then went through the youth departments of the Boston Junior Bruins , which he led as captain in the 2011/12 season and scored 86 points in 36 games . In the same year he took part in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck , where he finished fourth with the team.

With the beginning of the 2012/13 season he joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the United States Ice Hockey Federation, located in Ann Arbor . With the NTDP, Eichel participated on the one hand in the game operations of the United States Hockey League (USHL), on the other hand, the junior teams also function directly as the U17, U18 and U20 national team of the USA. He took part in both the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2013 , where he won the bronze medal with the team, and the U18 World Cup 2013 , where the team won the silver medal. In the following year he became U18 world champion in 2014 , where he led the team as assistant captain. The American also played for the U20 national team for the first time when they finished fifth at the 2014 U20 World Cup . In his second USHL season he scored 45 points in 24 games and was elected to the USHL Second All-Star Team at the end of the season .

Boston University

After the end of the 2013/14 season he left the NTDP and enrolled at Boston University and ran from then on for their terriers in Hockey East . There he had an outstanding season as a freshman : He was the first after 16 years in Hockey East who was able to achieve an average of 2.0 points per game in the regular season (44 in 22); he was also three times rookie of the month and once player of the month. At the end of the regular season he was named both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, which had only been achieved two freshmen before him. He was also part of the All-Rookie Team and the First All-Star Team and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best college ice hockey player in the USA, which he also won.

Through these achievements, Eichel was considered one of the most promising talents for the NHL Entry Draft 2015 and was traded together with Connor McDavid as a possible overall first . Of all relevant scouting services, the American came in second in the rankings behind McDavid. In this position he was subsequently selected by the Buffalo Sabers , who a few days later equipped him with a three-year contract.

After taking part in the U20 World Cup in 2015 , he also made his senior debut in the same year when he won the bronze medal at the World Cup .

Buffalo Sabers

As part of the preparation for the 2015/16 season , Eichel was able to earn a regular place in the NHL squad of the Sabers, so he made his professional debut on October 8, 2015 and scored a goal directly, making him the youngest scorer in the franchise - Made history. He finished the season with 56 points in 81 games in second place on the rookie scorer list and was subsequently elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . In the subsequent off-season he took part in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 with the North America team, a selection of U23 players from Canada and the USA . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , the attacker contracted a sprain in his ankle and subsequently missed about a quarter of the season. Nevertheless, he achieved a personal statistic that was one point better than the previous year. He then signed a new contract in Buffalo in October 2017 that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 10 million over the next eight years.

During the 2017/18 season he represented the Sabers for the first time in the NHL All-Star Game . Shortly before the start of the 2018/19 season, Eichel was named Buffalo's team captain, succeeding Brian Gionta , who had worn the "C" until 2017. The American then increased his personal statistics significantly to 82 points from 77 games and thus achieved an average point of over 1.0 in the NHL for the first time. He held this position in the following, shortened 2019/20 season .
