Michael Allen "Mike" Ramsey (born December 3, 1960 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player and coach who played 1185 games for the Buffalo Sabers , Pittsburgh Penguins and in the course of his active career between 1978 and 1997 Detroit Red Wings has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Ramsey celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the national team of the United States by winning the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid - the so-called " Miracle on Ice " . He also took part in the NHL All-Star Game four times and was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 for his services to ice hockey in the United States .
Career
Mike Ramsey began his career as a hockey player at the University of Minnesota , for whose ice hockey team he took part in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the 1978/79 season . With his team, he immediately won the championship of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and the championship of the NCAA. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1979 in the first round as the eleventh player of the Buffalo Sabers . The 1979/80 season began the defender with Team USA , in whose Olympic preparation he took part and finished it with the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League . In his rookie year in the NHL, he scored two goals and eight assists in a total of 26 games. From 1980 until the end of the 1992/93 season , Ramsey was one of the leading players in the Buffalo Sabers. During this period he took part in the NHL All-Star Game four times (1982, 1983, 1985 and 1986). On March 22, 1993 he was given in exchange for Bob Errey to the Pittsburgh Penguins . There he stayed for a year and a quarter before he was hired as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings . Following the 1996/97 season , the American ended his active career at the age of 36.
From 1997 to 2000 Ramsey was assistant coach of his former club Buffalo Sabers from the NHL. From 2001 to 2010 he held the same position for their league rivals Minnesota Wild .

For the USA , Ramsey took part in the junior division exclusively in the 1979 World Junior Championship . At senior level he represented the US at the 1982 World Cup and in the years 1984 and 1987 at the Canada Cup in part. He was also in his country's squad at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , where he and his team won the gold medal.
