Steven Bradley Ott (born August 19, 1982 in Summerside , Prince Edward Island ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach. The center played over 900 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Dallas Stars and the St. Louis Blues . He has been an assistant coach at the Blues since May 2017.
Career
Steve Ott was drafted in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft in 25th place by the Dallas Stars after he had started his career in the junior Ontario Hockey League with the Windsor Spitfires the previous season. As a result of the draft, the striker stayed two more seasons at Windsor and received his first professional contract from the Stars for the 2002/03 season . He also represented the Canadian junior team at the 2001 and 2002 World Junior Championships . He won a silver and a bronze medal.
After playing briefly in the American Hockey League with the Utah Grizzlies , he made the jump to the NHL team of stars during the year. During the lockout - 2004/05 season he played again in the AHL for the Hamilton Bulldogs and set with 279 penalty minutes a new team season record. In the 2006/07 season Ott was one of the many injured in the Dallas Stars team and was therefore only able to play 19 games.
On February 28, 2014, Steve Ott was transferred to the St. Louis Blues with Ryan Miller . In return, the Buffalo Sabers received goalkeeper Jaroslav Halák and striker Chris Stewart , as well as Prospect William Carrier and two draft picks. Ott stayed in St. Louis for almost two years before his expiring contract was not extended after the 2015/16 season, so that in July 2016 he joined the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent for one year. Shortly before the trade deadline at the end of February 2017, the Red Wings parted ways with Ott, as they handed him over to the Canadiens de Montréal for a six- round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . There he ended the 2017/18 season and then his active career when he was introduced as the new assistant coach of the St. Louis Blues in May 2017.
Steve Ott was classified as an agitator in terms of player type . His style of play included a very aggressive way of provoking the opponent through sometimes unfair actions. He was also considered a good pugilist. However, Ott also impressed with good skating properties and was also a dangerous power forward . His draft position, which is unusually high for this type of player, underlines this.
