Carl Gunnarsson (born November 9, 1986 in Örebro ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League since June 2014 . With the team, the defender won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs . Prior to that, he spent five years with the Toronto Maple Leafs .
Career
Carl Gunnarsson began his career in his hometown in the youth of Örebro HK , for whose professional team he made his debut in the HockeyAllsvenskan in the 2003/04 season , where he had four assists in 43 games in his rookie year . Then the defender moved to Linköpings HC , for which he was only used in the youth field in the following season. In the 2005/06 season Gunnarsson played for the first time in the Elitserien , where he remained point and penalty in 14 games. He also played in 12 games for the second division IFK Arboga this season .
In 2007 and 2008 Gunnarsson was runner-up with Linköpings, where he also ran 15 times for VIK Västerås HK in the HockeyAllsvenskan in the 2006/07 season. In the 2008/09 season, the left shooter was on the ice in all four group games for his team in the newly founded Champions Hockey League .
On June 3, 2009, the Swede was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , who had previously selected him in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round as a total of 194th player.
After four years in Toronto, the Maple Leafs gave him in June 2014, including a four-round vote for the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, to the St. Louis Blues , who in return transferred Roman Polák to Toronto.
With the Blues, Gunnarsson won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs .
International
For Sweden , Gunnarsson took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2004 , as well as the World Championships in 2009 and 2010 .
