Roman Polák (born April 28, 1986 in Ostrava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Vítkovice in the Czech extra league since June 2020 . The defender had previously spent over 15 years in North America, playing over 800 games in the National Hockey League .
Career
Roman Polák began his career as a hockey player in his Czech homeland in the youth team of HC Sareza Ostrava , where he was active until 2003. He then played for a year in the youth department of HC Vítkovice Steel , whereupon he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 in the sixth round as a total of 180th by the St. Louis Blues .
First, however, the defender played in the 2004/05 season for the Kootenay Ice in the Canadian top juniors league Western Hockey League , and then one season for HC Vitkovice Steel in the Czech long Extraliga before the right shooter in the 2006/07 season be Made debut in the National Hockey League for the St. Louis Blues. In his rookie year he stayed pointless in 19 games and played mostly for the Blues farm team , the Peoria Rivermen from the American Hockey League . In the 2008/09 season , his first full NHL season, Polák scored 15 points, including one goal, in a total of 73 games.
After eight years in St. Louis, the Blues gave him in June 2014 to the Toronto Maple Leafs , who in return transferred Carl Gunnarsson and a four-round vote for the 2014 NHL Entry Draft to St. Louis.
In February 2016, Polák and Nick Spaling were handed over to the San Jose Sharks , who in return each sent a second-round vote for the Entry Drafts 2017 and 2018 and Raffi Torres to Toronto. After the end of the season, Polák did not receive a new contract in San Jose and thus returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent in July 2016 . In October 2017, his contract, which had already expired, was extended by a year before he joined the Dallas Stars in July 2018, also as a free agent, on the basis of a one-year contract . After renewed extension, the Czech returned to his home country for the 2020/21 season by signing a contract with his training club HC Vítkovice in June 2020 during the interrupted 2019/20 season.
International
For the Czech Republic , Polák took part in the 2004 U18 Junior World Championships and the 2005 and 2006 U20 Junior World Championships . He was also in the Czech squad at the 2009 and 2014 World Championships , the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
