Raphael "Raffi" Torres (born October 8, 1981 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 703 games for the New York Islanders , Edmonton Oilers , Columbus Blue Jackets , Buffalo Sabers during his active career between 1998 and 2016 , Vancouver Canucks , Phoenix Coyotes and San Jose Sharks played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position .

Career

Raffi Torres began his career as a hockey player with the Brampton Battalion , for which he was active from 1998 to 2001 in the Ontario Hockey League . During this time he was selected in the first round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft as the fifth player in total by the New York Islanders , for whom he played in the National Hockey League from 2001 to 2003 . Mostly he came to the two seasons, however, for their farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from the American Hockey League (AHL). Then the attacker was Edmonton Oilers made, for which he played the next five years in the NHL, and with whom he in the 2005/06 season , the final of the Stanley Cup reached, in which he and his team the Carolina Hurricanes defeated . On July 1, 2008 Torres was transferred to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Gilbert Brulé , for which he scored 20 scorer points, including eight goals, in 51 regular season games in the 2008/09 season . He also scored two assists in four games during the Columbus Blue Jackets' first playoff participation.

In March 2010 it was given to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for Nathan Paetsch . In August 2010, Torres signed a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent . On July 1, 2011, he agreed on a long-term contract with the Phoenix Coyotes .

On April 21, 2012, Torres was suspended for an irregular check against the head of Chicago's Marián Hossa for the duration of 25 NHL games, the fifth-longest suspension in league history. At the trade deadline on April 3, 2013, it was given to the San Jose Sharks . The striker stayed there for the 2013/14 season before he was completely out of action the following year due to an injury to the cruciate ligaments .

After another check against Jakob Silfverberg's head in a preparatory game against the Anaheim Ducks in October 2015, Torres was suspended for 41 games - half of the season. This was the longest suspension issued by the NHL; Torres also had to pay a fine of $ 440,000. Thus Torres did not return to the Sharks squad until January 2016 and was initially handed over to the San Jose Barracuda , the Sharks farm team from the AHL. A little later, as well as a second-round vote for the Entry Drafts 2017 and 2018, he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs , who in return sent Nick Spaling and Roman Polák to San Jose. In the same breath, the Maple Leafs awarded him to the San Jose Barracuda until the end of the 2015/16 season. Due to persistent problems with the operated knee, Torres did not play any more games following the transfer deal. In November 2016, he finally announced the official end of his active career.

International

For Canada Torres took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 2001 , where he won the bronze medal with his team.
