Nathan Paetsch (born March 30, 1983 in LeRoy , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League since September 2017 .
Career
Paetsch started his career in 1999 at the age of 16 in the Western Hockey League with the Moose Jaw Warriors . In the 2000/01 season he was named Defender of the Year in an internal team election and after the season he was named Playoff MVP by the WHL . He also played in the 2001 CHL Top Prospects Game. Nathan Paetsch was selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals as 58th in the second round, but there was no contract between the Capitals and him. Therefore, he was entered again in the draft list for the NHL Entry Draft 2003 , in which he was selected in the seventh round as 202nd by the Sabers.
In the same year he ended his engagement in the WHL and started his professional career with the Sabers farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . There he was able to improve his point yield from year to year and established himself within the team that named him the Most Valuable Player of the season in 2005/06. He played his first NHL game on January 7, 2006 for the Sabers, in which he reached his first NHL scorer point. Although he returned to Rochester after that one game, but was recalled to the Sabers squad due to a series of injuries to the Sabers defenders during the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He made his debut in the NHL playoffs in the seventh game of the Eastern Conference final against the Carolina Hurricanes . From the summer of 2006 Paetsch was permanently in the NHL squad, but he did not manage to earn a regular place. In March 2010 he was given to the Columbus Blue Jackets together with a draft pick in exchange for Raffi Torres . In July 2010, he signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers . In October 2010 he was traded from Florida to the Vancouver Canucks , which loaned him to the Rochester Americans. However , he spent the 2010/11 season mostly at the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL, before the defender received a contract with the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg from the German Ice Hockey League in June 2011 . For the 2012/13 season , the Canadian was signed by the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
Paetsch won the Calder Cup with the Griffins in 2013 and 2017 . He then returned to Rochester Americans in September 2017.
