Nicholas "Nick" Spaling (born September 19, 1988 in Palmerston , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 494 games for the Nashville Predators , Pittsburgh Penguins , Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose between 2005 and 2018 Sharks has contested in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Spaling celebrated his greatest career success wearing the Team Canada jersey by winning the prestigious Spengler Cup in 2016 .
Career
Nick Spaling began his career as a hockey player with the Kitchener Rangers , for which he was active from 2005 to 2008 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League . In the 2007/08 season , the center and his team won the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the OHL championship. He also received the William Hanley Trophy as the league's Most Sportsmanlike Player this season . During his junior years he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in the second round as the 58th player in total by the Nashville Predators , for whose farm team Milwaukee Admirals from the American Hockey League he played predominantly from 2008 to 2010. In the 2009/10 season , the Canadian also made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Nashville Predators, preparing three goals in a total of 34 games.

In the 2010/11 season Spaling was able to work out a regular place with the Nashville Predators and was on the ice in a total of 86 games. He scored ten goals and ten assists. He also ran in another four games for Nashville's AHL farm team Milwaukee Admirals, scoring one goal and one assist.
On June 27, 2014, the Nashville Predators announced that Spaling and Patric Hörnqvist would be transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for James Neal . After a year with the Penguins, he was handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs together with Kasperi Kapanen , Scott Harrington and a first and a third round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Phil Kessel , Tim Erixon , Tyler Biggs and a second-round vote for the same draft moved to Pittsburgh.
In February 2016, Spaling and Roman Polák were handed over to the San Jose Sharks , who in return each sent a second-round vote for the Entry Drafts 2017 and 2018 and Raffi Torres to Toronto.
After the 2015/16 season, his contract in San Jose was not extended, so Spaling joined Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League A in August 2016 . There he signed a one-year contract with an additional year as an option. After fulfilling this at the end of the 2017/18 season, the Canadian ended his active career at the age of 29. During his time in Switzerland, he won the prestigious Spengler Cup with Team Canada in 2016 .
