In the 2007/08 season , the defender made his debut for his professional team in the Elitserien , the top Swedish division, when he was on the ice in two games in which he remained pointless and punished. In the following season he was finally able to assert himself in the professional team of Skellefteå and scored two goals and five assists in a total of 54 games in his first full professional year. At the same time, he came as a loan player to three missions for the second division Malmö Redhawks in the HockeyAllsvenskan and prepared two goals. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in the first round as a total of 23 players by the Calgary Flames . Then he stayed with his hometown club, where he was able to improve continuously in the following years. In addition, he was selected in the KHL Junior Draft 2010 in the seventh round as the 186th player of Salawat Yulayev Ufa .

On June 1, 2011, the Calgary Flames gave its rights to the New York Rangers in a barter deal. On the same day, the Swede signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New York Rangers. For the 2011/12 season , Erixon was ordered by the New York Rangers to North America, where he played for their farm team Connecticut Whale in the American Hockey League . On July 23, 2012 he was transferred to the Columbus Blue Jackets along with Artyom Anissimow and Brandon Dubinsky and a first-round vote for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . The New York Rangers received in return Rick Nash , Steven Delisle and a third-round draft pick.

After two years in Columbus, he switched to the Chicago Blackhawks in December 2014 , who in return gave Jeremy Morin to the Blue Jackets. The Swede only stayed there for a few months until he was signed off waiver by the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 2015 . In Toronto he ended the season before he was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with Phil Kessel , Tyler Biggs and a second-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . The Maple Leafs received in return Kasperi Kapanen , Nick Spaling , Scott Harrington and a first- and a third-round vote for the same draft. In the service of the penguins, the Swede was only used in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins until his contract expired in summer 2017 . As a free agent , he finally received a trial contract with the Binghamton Devils in September , but after five missions it did not become a permanent commitment before he signed a permanent AHL contract with the Springfield Thunderbirds in late October . The following season he returned to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins.
