history

The Swedish U20 celebrates winning the 2012 World Cup .

The Swedish U20 national ice hockey team was founded in 1974 on the occasion of the first unofficial hosting of a junior world championship . Up to and including 1998, the U20 national team covered the entire junior area at the World Championships, while the U19 national team took part in the Junior European Championships. Since the introduction of the U18 World Championships in 1999 , the Swedish U20 national team has only represented the U20 junior level at world championships.

The Swedish U20 national team is one of the strongest in the world and is fifth in the all-time medal table following the 2018 U20 World Cup with two world championship titles, eleven silver and five bronze medals. After the first bronze medal was won at the second (still unofficial) world championship in 1975 , the Swedes won silver for the first time in 1978 behind the Soviet Union . Another three years later, the Tre Kronors , in which the later NHL players Jan Erixon , Patrik Sundström , Peter Sundström and Michael Thelvén were on the ice, won the title at the Junior World Championship in 1981 for the first time. It was only more than 30 years later that the Swedish offspring could repeat this success at the U20 World Cup in 2012 .
