Joakim Nordström (born February 25, 1992 in Tyresö ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League since July 2018 . Previously, the center was a little over two years active with the Chicago Blackhawks , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2015 playoffs , and played for the Carolina Hurricanes . He also became world champion with the Swedish national team in 2017 .

Career

Joakim Nordström began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of AIK Solna, with whose U18 juniors he won the U18 Allsvenskan championship in the 2008/09 season. In the 2009/10 season, the center made his debut for AIKs professional team in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan , where he remained in two games point and penalty. He was then selected in the third round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft as the 90th player of the Chicago Blackhawks .

Nordström has been under contract with the Blackhawks since 2013 and made his NHL debut against the Washington Capitals on October 1 . After he was subsequently used in the AHL, he was recalled to the NHL squad in December 2013. He has been the team captain of the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL since the 2014/15 season. At the same time, he made 38 NHL appearances in the 2014/15 season and won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks at the end of the playoffs .

In September 2015, Nordström was handed over to the Carolina Hurricanes together with Kris Versteeg , which in turn transferred the young players Dennis Robertson and Jake Massie to Chicago. The Blackhawks also swapped their third-round voting rights for the Hurricanes' five-round voting rights for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . Chicago made space in the Salary Cap through this swap , which shortly afterwards extended the contract with Marcus Krüger .

After the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract in Carolina was not renewed, so he signed a two-year contract with the Boston Bruins as a free agent .

International

For Sweden , Nordström took part in the 2010 U18 Junior World Championship , where he and his team were runner-up. This was followed by winning the gold medal at the U20 Junior World Championship in 2012 and the Men's World Championship in 2017 .
