David Pastrňák (born May 25, 1996 in Havířov ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League since July 2014 . In 2020 he won the Maurice Richard Trophy as the league's top scorer.
Career
youth
David Pastrňák was born in Havířov and played in his youth for the local HC AZ Havířov . His father Milan Pastrňák (1961-2013) was also a hockey player and played in the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons for the Schwenninger ERC II in the 2nd ice hockey league . After his career, he coached his son in the youth team of HC AZ Havířov until he made his debut for the men's team in the second division in the 2011/12 season as a 16-year-old . However, Pastrňák spent most of the 2011/12 season on loan in the U18 team of HC Oceláři Třinec .
After taking part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge with the Czech national team in the summer of 2012 , he moved to Sweden for Södertälje SK . There he made his professional debut in HockeyAllsvenskan , but spent most of the season in the club's U20 team and thus played in the J20 SuperElit , the highest junior league in Sweden. There the attacker got 29 scorer points in 36 games . He also took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2013 , where he finished seventh with the team. In the subsequent KHL Junior Draft 2013 , Severstal Tscherepowez selected him in 34th position, before he returned to his homeland in August 2013 for the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and won the bronze medal there.
Pastrňák mainly spent the 2013/14 season with the first team of Södertälje SK and scored 24 points in 36 appearances in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan. He also took part in the U18 World Cup and the U20 World Cup in 2014, where he acted as assistant captain for the former and won the silver medal with the team. After these achievements, the Central Scouting Service of the National Hockey League placed him in fifth place of the most promising European outfield players for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft 2014 . In the actual draft, the Boston Bruins then selected him in 25th position.
Boston Bruins
Pastrňák signed an entry contract with the Boston Bruins just a few weeks after the draft and was subsequently given up to the Providence Bruins , Boston's farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he started the 2014/15 season, but was called up to the NHL squad for the first time in November 2014 and subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League . In January 2015 he took part in the AHL All-Star Classic and represented the U20 national team of his home country again at the U20 World Cup . He did the same a year later at the U20 World Cup in 2016 , where he finished fifth with the Czech selection. A little later, he made his debut for the Czech senior team when the attacker took part in the 2016 World Cup, where he finished fifth with the team. He also represented his home country a little later at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
In the 2016/17 season, Pastrňák increased his personal statistics significantly to 70 points in 75 games, making him the second best scorer on his team. He was then the youngest player in history to receive the Zlatá hokejka , which honors the best Czech player. In September 2017, he signed a new deal in Boston that should earn him a total of $ 40 million in salaries over the next six years before becoming the Bruins' top scorer with 35 hits and 80 points in the 2017/18 season. Subsequently, the attacker received the second Zlatá hokejka in a row.
At the end of the shortened 2019/20 season , the Czech topped the NHL's top scorer list with 48 goals together with Alexander Ovetschkin , so that he was honored with the Maurice Richard Trophy .
