The 64th National Hockey League All-Star Game took place on January 26, 2019 at the SAP Center in San José , California . The Metropolitan Division team won the tournament format All-Star Game and also provided the most valuable player in the person of Sidney Crosby .

In the run-up to the NHL All-Star Games, four teams were formed, each consisting of players from one division. First, a player from each division was selected by means of a fan vote, who also functions as team captain. Auston Matthews , Alexander Ovetschkin , Nathan MacKinnon and Connor McDavid prevailed in this vote , although Alexander Ovetschkin announced a few days later that he would not be participating in the All-Star Game this year. In addition, another vote was introduced this year, in which the fans could choose another, “last” player per division for the All-Star Game under the motto “Last Man In”. In this election, Jeff Skinner , Kris Letang , Gabriel Landeskog and Leon Draisaitl received the most votes from the fans, while the other participating actors were announced by the NHL on January 2nd. As a result, each division provided an eleven-man squad, each of the 31 franchises should be represented by at least one actor; In the end, Montréal did not provide a player due to injury. The coaches who and their teams had the best point average in the respective division were automatically nominated as team bosses (deadline January 5, 2019).

As in the previous year, the respective divisions of a conference competed against each other in the two semifinals and thus determined the two finalists. Each of the three games was played in 3-on-3 mode over 20 minutes each. If it had been a draw after regular playing time, a shootout would have followed immediately .

As in previous events, the NHL All-Star Skills Competition was held this year on the day before the actual All-Star Game , in which the players compete against each other in individual competitions.
