Pekka Päiviö Rinne (born November 3, 1982 in Kempele ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League since 2005 . He is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the league, so he was awarded the Vezina Trophy in 2018 .
Career
As early as 2000/01 when he played with the Oulun Kärpät junior team in the Finnish A-Junior League, Rinne got his first glimpses of the SM-liiga with the Kärpät A-team. From 2001 to 2005 he played as a backup in the A-team for the Kärpät goalkeeper Niklas Bäckström and came on a few appearances as a starter. He was selected in the eighth round at a total of 258th position in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators .
For the 2005/06 season he moved to the Milwaukee Admirals , the farm team of the Nashville Predators in the American Hockey League . He also came on some assignments with the Predators in the NHL. After the number-one keeper of the Predators Tomas Vokoun turned out and for him Chris Mason stepped in, was channel for backing up the Predators, not just in the last four games of the regular season, but also in the first round of play-offs , on the but the crew couldn't get out. In the 2006/07 season , Rinne was continued in the Predators organization. After the Predators had transferred Vokoun to the Florida Panthers , Rinne would be Chris Mason's backup goalie in the 2007/08 season . Due to the staggering performance of Mason, Dan Ellis , whom the Predators had brought from Dallas in July , came to more and more missions. Ellis became the new goalkeeper of the Predators after a short time thanks to his strong performances, so Mason became the backup goalie again and Rinne had to go back to the Predators farm team. After the management of the Predators was able to agree on a new contract with Ellis, they transferred Mason on the day of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft for a four-round suffrage to the St. Louis Blues . Thus, Pekka Rinne became Dan Ellis' back-up goalie again.
Pekka Rinne established himself as the Predators' regular goalkeeper during the 2008/09 season . Rinne developed into a real top goalkeeper in the NHL in the 2010/11 season , when he played 64 games during the regular season and blocked 93% of the shots in these. In the following season , the Finn broke the franchise record for the most victories of the season by a goalkeeper, previously held by Tomáš Vokoun with 36 won games in the 2005/06 season, with 43 wins. Also in the 2011/12 season he outbid 25 career shutouts in the Predators Vokouns record for most games without conceding a goal, which was previously at 21 shutouts.
Due to the NHL lockout , Rinne played for HK Dinamo Minsk in the Continental Hockey League from September 2012 .
In the 2016/17 season, the Finn reached the Stanley Cup final with the Predators, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins there . In the following year he led the league's goalkeepers with eight shutouts (alongside Andrei Wassilewski ) and was nominated with Wassilewski and Connor Hellebuyck for the Vezina Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the NHL, which he subsequently received in his fourth nomination after 2011, 2012 and won for the first time in 2015. He was also elected to the NHL First All-Star Team .
On January 9, 2020, he scored his first goal in the NHL with an empty net goal against the Chicago Blackhawks . He became the twelfth goalkeeper to do so in the NHL, and the first since Mike Smith in October 2013.
