Career

Ontario Hockey League (2007-2011)

Ryan Ellis began playing ice hockey at the age of four with the Belmont Bombers and played for various children's and youth teams from the Canadian province of Ontario . Among his greatest successes from this time are regional tournament victories when he was active for teams from Mississauga . In 2007 he was on the ice for the Cambridge Hawks and won the Ontario Alliance Championship with his team. He was then selected in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the second round at a total of 22nd position by the Windsor Spitfires . Ellis decided to move to the OHL and scored 63 points scorer in as many games in his rookie season during the regular season . In the subsequent play-offs, the Spitfires were eliminated in the first round against the Sarnia Sting , Ellis scored five points in the five games. Following the 2007/08 OHL season , Ellis was nominated along with teammate Taylor Hall for both the OHL and Canadian Hockey League All-Rookie teams. In recognition of his playful and academic achievements, he also received the Bobby Smith Trophy .

In his second season in the Ontario Hockey League, the Canadian was named defender of the month three times. During this season he was also invited to the OHL All-Star-Classic and the CHL Top Prospects Game . He finished the regular season as the best points defender in the league, only striker Taylor Hall was more successful with one point. Ellis was awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy , which is given annually to the best defensive player in the Ontario Hockey League. In the election he prevailed against PK Subban and Cameron Gaunce .

The Windsor Spitfires qualified as the top-ranked team in the Western Conference for the OHL play-offs 2009. The team won the J. Ross after victories against the Owen Sound Attack , Plymouth Whalers , London Knights and the Brampton Battalion as champions of the Ontario Hockey League Robertson Cup . In addition, the team qualified for the Memorial Cup 2009 . Ryan Ellis completed 20 play-off games and scored 31 points scorer. At the tournament for the Memorial Cup , the Spitfires played their way to the finals, where they prevailed against the Western Hockey League team Kelowna Rockets . Ellis was elected to the tournament's All-Star Team following that competition.

Ahead of the upcoming NHL Entry Draft , an annual event where National Hockey League teams can secure the rights to promising young players, the Canadian was rated the 16th best North American young player. During the draft, Ellis was selected in the first round in eleventh place overall by the Nashville Predators . Ellis then took part in the Predators training camp, but injured his wrist there and was sent back to the Spitfires. A little later he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Predators .

Due to the injury suffered in the pre-season, he missed the Windsor Spitfires on the first ten game days of the 2009/10 OHL season . In total, the defender played 48 games in the regular season. The Spitfires again took first place in the Western Conference and successfully defended the championship title of the Ontario Hockey League. In the play-offs, Ellis was the second best point collector in the league behind Taylor Hall. At the 2010 Memorial Cup , the Windsor Spitfires were undefeated and won their second Memorial Cup in a row.

Ellis returned to Nashville's training camp prior to the start of the 2010-11 season but was not nominated for the NHL team and returned to Windsor for his final junior season . There he was appointed team captain of the Spitfires. In November 2010, Ellis was named OHL Defender of the Month after scoring 17 points in that month's ten games. In the same month he also achieved his 230th scorer point, overtaking Joel Quenneville as Windsor's best- scoring defender of all time. On February 25, 2011, the defender scored in a game between the Spitfires and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds three assists , while he scored his 300th point in the OHL. Ellis became the third defender in the history of the Ontario Hockey League after Denis Potvin and Rick Corriveau to reach more than 300 scorer points in the league. Ryan Ellis finished the 2010/11 regular season with 101 points and was honored as the most valuable player in the OHL with the Red Tilson Trophy . In the subsequent play-offs, the Windsor Spitfires were eliminated in the Western Conference final against the Owen Sound Attack . Ryan Ellis was subsequently recognized by the Canadian Hockey League as best defender with the CHL Defender of the Year Award and as Player of the Year with the CHL Player of the Year Award.

Career as a professional player (since 2011)

After the play-off from the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League Ryan Ellis was on 29 April 2011 by the farm team of the Nashville Predators, the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League , by means of a so-called amateur tryout (ATO) under contract . The Admirals were in the semifinals of the Western Conference and met there on the Houston Eros . Milwaukee lost to the Eros in the best-of-seven series with 3-4 games, Ellis was used in all games and scored one goal and one assist. In the following season, Ellis established himself as a regular for the Admirals and scored 18 points in the first 29 games of the 2011/12 AHL season . On December 26, 2011, Ryan Ellis was promoted to the NHL squad by the Nashville Predators. He made his debut the same day at Nashville's home game against the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League. He scored his first point on January 7, 2012, in the same game he scored his first goal against goalkeeper Justin Peters of the Carolina Hurricanes . While regular play of the NHL paused in the course of the 59th All-Star Game , he took part in the All-Star game of the American Hockey League taking place on the same day. Overall, the defensive player completed 32 NHL games in the main round of the 2011/12 season ; in addition, he was used in three play-off games for the Nashville Predators.

In the 2016/17 season Ellis reached the Stanley Cup final with the Predators, but was defeated there by the Pittsburgh Penguins . In August 2018, he signed a new eight-year contract in Nashville that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 6.25 million.

Ryan Ellis had his first assignment for the umbrella organization Hockey Canada during the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2008 , where he went on the ice for the team from the province of Ontario. Ontario remained undefeated throughout the tournament and won the gold medal after beating the selection of the US selection in the final . Ellis scored nine points scorer in six games and was the second best point collector for Team Ontario behind Matt Duchene . In addition, he was elected to the tournament's All-Star Team.

He represented his home country for the first time with the Canadian national team at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2008 . The Canadians won the gold medal at this tournament after beating the Russian team in the final . Ellis was the most successful defender of the tournament with seven scorer points. At the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2008 a few months later he repeated this success, and he and his team again took first place after beating the Russians in the final.

Due to these achievements, Ellis was already used at the age of 17 at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2009 . At this tournament he won his fourth gold medal in the junior division after the Canadians defeated the Swedish national team in the final. At the U20 World Cup the following year , the Canadian national team won the silver medal after a final defeat against the US selection. Ellis was also nominated for the 2011 U20 World Cup , making him the seventh player in the history of the Canadian Ice Hockey Federation to compete in three U20 World Junior Championships. For the 2011 tournament he was also appointed captain of his team. The Canadians reached the final again, in which they were defeated by the Russian team. Ellis was then voted the tournament's best defender and appointed to the All-Star team.

The defender is the most successful defender of all time with 25 points scored at the U20 World Junior Championships. Within the team, he ranks third in this category behind strikers Eric Lindros , who scored 31 points between 1990 and 1992, and Jordan Eberle (26 points). His 20 assists are the sole record before Lindros' 19.

For the senior national team of Canada, Ellis made his debut at the 2014 World Cup , in which the team finished fifth. Two years later, at the 2016 World Cup , he became world champion with Team Canada , although he joined the team late due to the playoff participation with the Predators and thus played a total of five games.

Play style

Ryan Ellis is an offensive defender who has the ability to make the game fast on the defensive. He is also characterized by a precise passing game, a hard shot and good puck handling. This means that he is given a lot of time on the ice, especially during outnumbered situations. In addition to his offensive skills, his defensive work as well as his commitment and leadership qualities are positively mentioned. Ellis' biggest disadvantage is his relatively small height of 178 cm, which, according to some critics, would stand in the way of a professional career and prevent him from a higher draft position and overshadow his playing skills. Ellis got support about his height from hockey Hall of Fame member Bobby Orr .

Private

Ryan Ellis grew up in the town of Hamilton belonging to Freelton community in the Canadian province of Ontario . He has a sister, Erica. As an adolescent, he favored the Toronto Maple Leafs ; his favorite player was Kris Russell . While with the Windsor Spitfires , he attended St. Anne Catholic High School. Ellis was a good student, receiving the Bobby Smith Trophy of the Ontario Hockey League in April 2008 for academic achievement . In February 2010 he was named Sportsman of the Year 2009 in the Golden Horseshoe Region. In the election, he prevailed against the quarterback Danny Brannagan and the marathon runner Reid Coolseat.
