The 1.78 m tall defender began his professional career with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Canadian Junior League Western Hockey League before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft as 67th in the third round of the Columbus Blue Jackets . As one of the most successful players in the Canadian Hockey League that put him franchise from Columbus already during the 2007/08 season regularly in the National Hockey League one. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season , Russell was sent to the farm team Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League .

In November 2011, the management of the Jackets swapped him for Nikita Nikitin of the St. Louis Blues . In July 2013, he was transferred to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a five-round suffrage in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft .

In February 2016, Russell was given to the Dallas Stars , with the Calgary Flames receiving Jyrki Jokipakka , Brett Pollock and a performance-based second-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . The second-round electoral law should become one for the first draft round of the same year if Dallas reaches the final of the Western Conference in the playoffs and Russell completes at least half of the games. This did not happen in the episode, as Dallas failed in the second round to the St. Louis Blues . After the Stars did not subsequently renew the defender's contract, the Edmonton Oilers secured the services of the Canadian a few days before the start of the 2016/17 game year . After a season, Russell signed a new four-year contract in Edmonton that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4 million.

International

With the Canadian U20 national team , Kris Russell was U20 World Champion in 2006 and 2007, and the defender scored five goals and five assists in a total of twelve Junior World Cup games . Russell was named to the Canadian squad for the 2010 World Cup in Germany . In the course of the tournament he was used in seven matches and scored four points, the Canadians failed in the quarter-finals to Russia .
