Mikko Koskinen (born July 18, 1988 in Vantaa ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League since May 2018 . In 2011 he was already active for the New York Islanders , who had selected him in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in 31st position, but he did not succeed in asserting himself in the NHL. In the meantime, he mainly spent at SKA Saint Petersburg in the Continental Hockey League , with which he won the Gagarin Cup in 2015 and 2017 . With theFor the Finnish national team , he took part in the 2018 Winter Olympics and won the silver medal at the 2014 and 2016 World Championships .
Career
Mikko Koskinen began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of Espoo Blues , for whose U18 juniors from 2004 to 2006 he was active in the third and second highest division of the corresponding age group. Then the goalkeeper moved to Kiekko-Vantaa from his hometown, where he stood between the posts for the U20 juniors of the club in the second-rate junior league Jr. AI divisioona and had the best catch rate of all goalkeepers in this. He then returned to the blues in Espoo. There he was also able to convince the U20 juniors, who competed in the top junior division in Finland, and also made his debut in the SM-liiga for the professional team of Espoo, which became runner-up at the end of the season.
In the 2008/09 season , the then 20-year-old goalkeeper was able to prevail in the Espoo Blues professional team and played 33 games as a regular goalkeeper in the main round, with an average of 1.91 goals conceded per game a guarantee for reaching second place the main round was. In the subsequent playoffs, the Finn led his team to fourth place with an average of 2.59 goals against and a catch rate of 91.2%. In the summer of 2009, the New York Islanders ordered the Finn to North America, where he would then be used for their farm teams . Due to injury, however, he fell out most of his first season overseas and was only able to play five appearances for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the American Hockey League and ten appearances for the Utah Grizzlies in the 2009/10 season , but with both teams knew how to convince. At the beginning of the 2010/11 season Koskinen played regularly for Bridgeport in the AHL before he made his debut for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League on February 8, 2011 in the home loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs . Two days later he succeeded with his team away against the Canadiens de Montréal his first victory as a goalkeeper in the NHL.
In November 2011 Koskinen returned to the SM-liiga after starting the 2011/12 season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL. He signed a one-season contract with KalPa Kuopio , which was later extended to the end of the 2012/13 season. He then returned to his hometown club, but was poached in October of the same year by HK Sibir Novosibirsk from the Continental Hockey League .
At HK Sibir he played until December 2014 and showed very good performances before he was exchanged for Alexander Salák from SKA Saint Petersburg . In April 2015 he won the Gagarin Cup with the SKA and was able to repeat this success two years later.
In May 2018, Koskinen moved back to the NHL by signing a one-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers . In his second engagement in the highest league in North America, he succeeded in asserting himself in the internal competition against Cam Talbot , so that he was given a new three-year contract in January 2019. This should bring him an average annual salary of 4.5 million US dollars at the start of the 2019/20 season.
