Career
Smith began his career in 1999 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Kingston Frontenacs in his hometown. There he shared the goalkeeping post with Andrew Raycroft , who later played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League . At the beginning of the 2000/01 season Smith left Kingston in the direction of Sudbury Wolves , who also played in the OHL, where he completed 43 games with a goal average of 2.52 and 91.3 percent saved shots. He was drawn after his first year in Sudbury in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars in 161st place in the fifth round, but remained in the OHL for another year.
As a professional player, the goalkeeper moved to the East Coast Hockey League in 2002 . In the service of the Lexington Men O'War , he managed to score a shutout and a goal in one game . At the same time, the game was his first win as a professional. In the same season he was also eleven times for the Utah Grizzlies in the American Hockey League , where he represented Jason Bacashihua and Corey Hirsch .
After he completed the 2004/05 season with the Houston Eros in the AHL and performed well, Smith played for the Iowa Stars , the AHL farm team of the Dallas Stars. Here he shared the position of goalkeeper with Dan Ellis and came to 50 games, which he completed with an average goal against 2.5 and a catch rate of 91.7%. He helped the Iowa Stars, who had only been founded in 2005, in their first play-offs , in which he was able to keep his performances constant and was also able to prevail as number 1 against Ellis. In April 2006 he was named Player of the Month. Smith also posted the first shutout in the short history of the Iowa Stars. In January 2006, Smith made his debut in the Stars' shirt when he was on the bench for a game as a substitute for Johan Hedberg , who represented Marty Turco , but was not used.
In the 2006/07 season , Smith played as Marty Turco's back-up for the Dallas Stars. Smith received a one-year contract from the stars. He celebrated his NHL debut on October 21, 2006 and crowned an outstanding performance with his first NHL shutout. In June 2007, he was finally elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . He was also awarded a $ 1.9 million two-year contract. Also in the 2007/08 season Smith convinced with good performances and continued to form the goalkeeper team of the Dallas Stars with Turco. At the end of February 2008 he was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning together with Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern , who sent Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist to Dallas. Smith was supposed to take the place as a regular goalkeeper at Tampa Bay.
After more than three years in Tampa, Smith received a free agent contract for two years with the Phoenix Coyotes on July 1, 2011 . He later extended this for another six years to a total salary of 34 million US dollars until the summer of 2019. In the 2013-14 season, Smith scored only the eleventh goalkeeper in NHL history. Two years before his existing contract expired, Smith was transferred to the Calgary Flames in mid-June 2017 in exchange for goalkeeper Chad Johnson and junior player Brandon Hickey . Arizona - the franchise changed its name in 2014 - took on a quarter of his ex-player's salary for the remaining two years of the contract.
After completing his contract in Calgary, Smith joined the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent in July 2019 , signing a one-year contract.
International
Smith represented his home country at the World Championships in Helsinki in 2013 and in the Czech Republic in 2015 . He led the team at the 2015 World Cup as a regular goalkeeper to win the gold medal. As the third goalkeeper in the squad with the maple leaves , he had already recorded his first international success the year before by winning the Olympic title. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia , Smith was left behind Carey Price and Roberto Luongo .
