Career

Johnson began his career in his hometown Calgary junior leagues before playing for the Brooks Bandits in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . He then moved to the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2005 and played for their ice hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In his debut season he set a new school record with an average goal against 2.56. In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , Johnson was selected in the fifth round in a total of 125th position by the Pittsburgh Penguins .

In his last college season in 2008-09, Johnson led the NCAA statistics with a 94 percent catch rate and the best goalscoring average in the league . He was then named the CCHA's best player and goalkeeper of the year and was nominated as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award .

In June 2009 Johnson was transferred to the New York Rangers in exchange for a five-round suffrage in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft , for whom he made his professional debut in the American Hockey League (AHL) the following season . There Johnson made the leap to the goalkeeper of the Hartford Wolf Pack , the rangers' farm team, straight away in his rookie season . On December 30, 2009, the goalkeeper also completed his first game in the National Hockey League , when he replaced regular goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist in the 6-0 defeat by the Philadelphia Flyers . Overall, he played six times for the Rangers in two seasons.

After three years in New York and Hartford, Johnson signed a one-year free agent contract with the Phoenix Coyotes in July 2012 . First he continued to work in the AHL for the Portland Pirates , before he was able to record the first shutout of his NHL career on January 28, 2013 when he was first used for the Coyotes . In total, he completed four appearances for the Coyotes in the 2012/13 season , conceding only five goals.

The following season Johnson signed his first pure NHL contract over a year with the Boston Bruins and played there as a substitute goalkeeper behind Tuukka Rask . This contract was not renewed after the end of the season, so Johnson joined the New York Islanders , who subsequently gave him up to the Buffalo Sabers in March 2015, including a success-based third-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Islanders received Michal Neuvirth . After the 2015/16 season, Johnson did not get a new contract in Buffalo, so he joined the Calgary Flames as a free agent in July 2016 . There he shared the stakes with Brian Elliott during the season . In June 2017, he and young player Brandon Hickey were given in exchange for Mike Smith to the Arizona Coyotes , with whom he was already under contract in the 2012/13 season. In Arizona, however, they did not agree on a new contract, so he returned to the Buffalo Sabers as a free agent only a few days later.

In July 2018, Johnson signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Blues , also as a free agent . They wanted to send him to the AHL via the waiver in December 2018 , but his contract was taken over by the Anaheim Ducks , who reacted to Ryan Miller's injury . In Anaheim, the Canadian played nine games until the end of the season before his expiring contract was not extended.

International

Chad Johnson first represented Canada at the 2010 World Cup in Germany, where he made three appearances as a substitute goalkeeper behind Chris Mason . He finished the tournament with a catch rate of 96.4 percent and an average goal against 0.82 as one of the best back-ups. With Canada, however, he was eliminated in the quarter-finals and finally reached seventh place. At the 2017 World Cup , Johnson was again in the Canadian squad and won the silver medal with the team.
