Michal Neuvirth (born March 23, 1988 in Ústí nad Labem , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League until July 2019 .

Career

Michal Neuvirth began his career as an ice hockey player in his Czech homeland in the youth team of HC Sparta Prague , for which he was active from 2003 to 2006. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the second round as the 34th player by the Washington Capitals . First, however, the goalkeeper played from 2006 to 2008 for two years in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League , where he was on the ice for the Plymouth Whalers , the Windsor Spitfires and most recently the Oshawa Generals .

At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, Neuvirth made it neither in the NHL squad of the Capitals, nor in the AHL squad of the Hershey Bears . Instead, he tried to get a contract with HC Oceláři Třinec in his home country . When this attempt failed, he returned to North America and played for the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL . Due to good performance, he was later appointed to the AHL squad of the Bears and got the chance to play his first NHL game after the injury of Brent Johnson .

The Czech made his National Hockey League debut for the Washington Capitals on February 14, 2009, when he saved 31 shots in his team's 5-1 away win at the Tampa Bay Lightning .

After he was only used in 13 games in the 2013/14 season , he was given to the Buffalo Sabers on March 5, 2014 together with Rostislav Klesla in exchange for Jaroslav Halák . A year later, the Sabers gave him to the New York Islanders and received in return Chad Johnson and a success-based third-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . Neuvirth only stayed in New York until the end of the season when he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in July 2015 .

Neuvirth was active in Philadelphia for four years, although he was used significantly less in the 2018/19 season and his contract was not extended in the summer of 2019.

International

For the Czech Republic , Neuvirth took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2005 , the U18 World Championship in 2006 and the U20 World Championship in 2008 . At the senior level, the goalkeeper made his debut at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 and came on a mission.
