Jeremy Smith (born April 13, 1989 in Dearborn , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Kunlun Red Star from the Continental Hockey League since June 2019 .
Career
Smith spent his junior years in the Ontario Hockey League . There he was at the beginning of the 2006/07 season an integral part of the squad of the Plymouth Whalers , where the goalkeeper acted as an almost equal substitute for the Czech Michal Neuvirth . Together they led the team to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup . Together, the team received the Dave Pinkney Trophy for the fewest goals conceded during the season. After the season Smith was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in the second round in 54th position by the Nashville Predators from the National Hockey League . In the following season Smith was then regular goalkeeper and was initially supported by Neuvirth and later Matt Hackett . For the game year 2008/09 Hackett finally took on a more weighty role that Smith made dispensable and he was transferred to league rivals Niagara IceDogs in January 2009 . There he acted again as a starter.
After the American had already been signed by the Nashville Predators in March 2008, he was in the gate of the Cincinnati Cyclones from the ECHL at the beginning of the 2009/10 season . There he shared the post with Robert Mayer . The team led the Cyclones to win the Kelly Cup at the end of the season and were awarded the trophy of the Kelly Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player . For the season 2010/11 Smith rose to the back-up with the Milwaukee Admirals from the American Hockey League (AHL), where he came to 28 missions behind Mark Dekanich . The two following years he was finally the first choice in the goal of the Admirals. Still, the Predators split from their draft election in the summer of 2013 and Smith joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent . There he occupied the goalkeeping position with the Springfield Falcons in the AHL, but left the team again after a year and was hired by the Boston Bruins in July 2014 . There, too, Smith did not get beyond missions in the AHL with the Providence Bruins . However, both parties extended the contract for one year in summer 2015. Shortly before the start of the 2015/16 season , the Bruins awarded him to league rivals Iowa Wild , for whom he played until the beginning of February 2016. He then worked for Providence until the end of the season.
In July 2016, another club change followed when Smith signed a contract with the Colorado Avalanche . After he had been on the San Antonio Rampage farm team until the beginning of February 2017 , he benefited from the injury of the goalkeeper Semyon Varlamov , so that he was promoted to the NHL squad as a substitute for Calvin Pickard . At his other three stations he had already sniffed the NHL air as an unused substitute, but was never deployed. He made his debut for the Avalanche on February 14, 2017 in the 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils .
At the end of the 2016/17 season, the Avalanche did not extend his expiring contract, so Smith joined the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent in July 2017 . In the same way, he moved to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in July 2018 , with whom he signed a contract that was strictly limited to the AHL. However, their NHL cooperation partner, the New York Islanders , received a contract for the rest of the season in February 2019. In June 2019, Smith decided to leave North America for the first time and joined Kunlun's Red Star from the Continental Hockey League .
International
For his home country, Smith played at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2008 in the Czech Republic . He completed all six tournament games as a regular goalkeeper and reached fourth place with the team.
