Career
Devante Smith-Pelly first played for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens in the Greater Toronto Hockey League from 2007 to 2008 , before the striker was selected in the first round of the 2008 OHL Priority Selection as eighth overall by the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors . In his rookie season with the team in the 2008/09 season , the Canadian completed 68 games and scored 30 points. In his second season , Smith-Pelly made the final breakthrough in the OHL, and he improved his offensive statistics significantly when he scored as many points in a total of 76 games. He was together with Casey Cizika's best scorer of the team. During the course of the season Smith-Pelly took part in the OHL All-Star Game and was also part of the Cherry team for the CHL Top Prospects Game.
In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round in 42nd position by the Anaheim Ducks . With the Californians he signed a three-year entry - level contract in December 2010 . During the 2010/11 season , the offensive player played a key role in ensuring that the majors reached the final series of the J. Ross Robertson Cup for the first time and were only subject to the Owen Sound Attack in the decisive seventh encounter . As host, Smith-Pelly took part with the team at the 2011 Memorial Cup , in which the right-handed shooter failed again in the final, this time against the Saint John Sea Dogs . As the best scorer in the majors, the striker was nominated for the tournament's All-Star team. The 2011/12 season he began in the NHL squad of the Anaheim Ducks, where he formed the third attack row at the start of the season together with Andrew Cogliano and Andrew Gordon . In his second use in the NHL on October 8, 2011, Smith-Pelly recorded his first point in conjunction with Gordon, when Cogliano defeated Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers with a wrist shot .
After almost four years in Anaheim, the Ducks handed him over to the Canadiens de Montréal in February 2015 and received Jiří Sekáč in return . A year later Smith-Pelly was given to the New Jersey Devils , with Montréal receiving Stefan Matteau in return .
In June 2017, the Devils bought out his remaining contract year (buy-out) , so that a little later he joined the Washington Capitals as a free agent . In the following season he achieved the first Stanley Cup win in franchise history with the Capitals . In the summer of 2019, his expiring contract in Washington was not renewed before participation in the pre-season of the Calgary Flames also did not result in a permanent commitment. At the end of October he finally joined the Chinese club Kunlun Red Star from the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
International
Smith-Pelly took in 2009 with the selection of Canada Ontario at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in part. In six games he scored three points and won the gold medal. Despite his involvement with the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League at the beginning of the 2011/12 season , the franchise for the U20 Junior World Cup 2012 released him . There Smith-Pelly was next to Brett Connolly the only NHL player in the Canadian squad. In the first tournament game against Finland, Smith-Pelly suffered a bone fracture in his foot when a shot was blocked .
