Andrej Šustr (born November 29, 1990 in Pilsen ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with Kunlun Red Star in the Continental Hockey League since July 2019 . He previously spent five years in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization and three years at the University of Nebraska Omaha .

Career

Andrej Šustr was born in Pilsen and started playing ice hockey at the age of eight after the Czech national team won the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics . He went through the youth teams of his hometown-based HC Plzeň in 1929 until he was awarded to the third-class HC Rokycany in the 2008/09 season . After only two missions there, Šustr did not return to the U20 of HC Plzeň, but left the Czech Republic in November 2008 for North America and joined the Kenai River Brown Bears in Soldotna , Alaska . After a year in the North American Hockey League , during which he stayed with a host family, the defender moved to the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League and thus in a higher junior league for the 2009/10 season . In Youngstown , Šustr recorded 19 points in 50 games; he also took the U20 national team of the Czech Republic at the 2010 U20 World Youth Championship in part.

college

After the 2009/10 season, the Czech received a scholarship to the University of Nebraska Omaha , where he was aiming for a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. At the same time he played for the Omaha Mavericks in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a university league organized by the NCAA ; he was the first Czech in the history of the Omaha Mavericks. In his three years at the University of Nebraska Omaha, Šustr increased his personal stats year after year to 25 points from 39 games in the 2012/13 season, in which he also led the Mavericks as assistant captain. In addition, he was elected to the WCHA's third all-star team in his final season , before signing an entry contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League in March 2013 , in which he already took part in a youth training camp last summer would have.

Just a week after signing the contract, Šustr made his debut in the NHL in the game against the New Jersey Devils . Another use for the Lightning followed, before it was given to the Syracuse Crunch , whose farm team from the American Hockey League . In Syracuse, the defender completed eight regular season games and 18 games in the play-offs. He also spent the beginning of the following season 2013/14 in the AHL before he was reappointed to the NHL squad in January 2014. There he managed to establish himself, so that he came to 42 missions by the end of the season and was also on the ice in three play-off games. In the 2014/15 season he reached the Stanley Cup final with the Lightning, but lost to the Chicago Blackhawks . The Lightning then extended his contract by two years.

As part of the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , Šustr made his debut in the senior national team of his home country and came up with three missions. After the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract in Tampa was not renewed, so the Czech joined the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in July 2018 and signed a one-year contract there. In the 2018/19 season he was mainly used with the San Diego Gulls in the AHL and left North America when he signed a contract with Kunlun Red Star in the Continental Hockey League in July 2019 .

Due to his height of 2.03 meters, he is often compared to Zdeno Chára .
