Ryan Sproul (born January 13, 1993 in Mississauga , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Kunlun Red Star from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since October 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Sproul was initially active in the Ontario Junior Hockey League before he decided in the summer of 2010 to continue his junior career in Canada. He decided against an engagement with the Tri-City Storm from the United States Hockey League and joined the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from the Ontario Hockey League , for which he went on the ice until spring 2013. Within the three years, the attacking defender made a lasting impression. In addition to numerous appointments to numerous selection teams, Sproul was the most dangerous defender in the league in two of the three years and also the best defensive player in his final year. This gave him the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the best defender of the OHL and automatically qualified him for the election for the Defenceman of the Year Award of the Canadian Hockey League , in which he prevailed against Kevin Gagné and Brenden Kichton .

After the defender was selected in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in 55th place by the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League and signed in March 2012, he switched to the professional field in April 2013. He made his debut in the 2012/13 season in the American Hockey League for Detroit's farm team Grand Rapids Griffins . With the exception of an NHL assignment in April 2014, he was only used in the AHL for the Griffins until the end of the 2015/16 season . After the end of his rookie season , he was elected to the AHL All-Rookie Team . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Sproul was given a permanent place in the Red Wings squad after his expiring contract had previously been extended by two years.

In October 2017, the Red Wings gave the defender to the New York Rangers and received Matt Puempel in return . Sproul ended the 2017/18 season with the Rangers and subsequently received no further contract. Looking for a new employer, the Canadian found what he was looking for at the beginning of the 2018/19 game year on the basis of a try-out contract with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. But he only completed one game before completing eleven games for league rivals Rocket de Laval . In early December 2018 he finally received a contract from the Hershey Bears until the end of the season.

In October 2019 he was signed by the Chinese club Kunlun Red Star from the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
