Career
youth
Matt Puempel played in his youth for the Sun County Panthers and Windsor Jr. Spitfires , among others , before he was selected in sixth position in the Priority Selection 2009 of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) by the Peterborough Petes . With the beginning of the following season 2009/10 he ran for the Petes in the OHL and led all rookies in the league in goals (33) and scorer points (64) in his first season , so that he was the best rookie with the Emms Family Award and was elected to the OHL First All-Rookie Team . A little later, the attacker was also honored as CHL Rookie of the Year , as the best newcomer to the Canadian Hockey League , the amalgamation of the three major Canadian youth leagues. He also made his international debut at the turn of the year when he took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 with the Canada Ontario team and won the silver medal there with the team. In August 2010 he won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament .
Could confirm to another season in the OHL where he his performance from the rookie season and the CHL Top Prospects Game was invited elected him Ottawa Senators in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft at 24th position and eventually took him in December 2011 under contract. After the 2011/12 OHL season, Puempel moved to the Senators organization for the first time and played nine games in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Binghamton Senators , the Ottawa Senators' farm team . In June 2012 the Peterborough Petes gave the Canadians at their own request to the Kitchener Rangers and received Zach Lorentz and two second-round voting rights in return. As a result, Puempel, who was initially unable to establish himself in the professional field of the Senators, played his last OHL season with the Rangers and came there in 51 games on 47 points scorer.
National Hockey League
After the 2012/13 OHL season, Puempel moved permanently to the Ottawa Senators organization, spending the entire 2013/14 season in the AHL, where he led the Binghamton Senators together with Mike Hoffman in goals (30). The attacker began the following season in Binghamton, but was appointed to the Ottawa Senators' NHL squad for the first time in February 2014, making his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a little later . By the end of the season Puempel came there on 13 missions, which he was able to double the following year and thus was used in approximately equal parts in the NHL and AHL. As part of the pre-season preparation for the 2016/17 season, Puempel established himself in the Senators' squad for the time being, after his contract was extended by one year in the summer of 2016. After 13 missions without a goal participation, he should then be sent back to the AHL in November 2016, although this had to be done via the waiver due to the new contractual situation . He was hired by the New York Rangers . Puempel scored his first career hat trick in the National Hockey League on December 29, 2016 in the New York Rangers' 6-3 victory over the Arizona Coyotes.
In October 2017, the Rangers gave it to the Detroit Red Wings and received Ryan Sproul in return .
