The Ouro-do-Brasil class is a two-unit class of ships. The orange juice tankers transport orange juice and orange juice concentrate in tanks. They were delivered to the Brazilian Fischer Group, the ship management is carried out by the Hamburg-based company Maritime Services Aleuropa.
history
The ships were delivered in 1993 and 1994 by the Kvaerner Kleven Florø shipyard in Norway and are mainly used in the South America – Europe and South America – USA routes. The principle was tested on the Ouro do Brasil , a converted core class reefer ship that was built in 1970 at the Solheimsviken shipyard in Bergen, Norway, and was demolished in 2003.
Ship description
The ships were built like reefer ships, the bridge house and engine room are aft. They have high holds in which a total of 16 stainless steel tanks with a capacity of 800 m³ each have been set up. The outer skin, the floor, the weather deck and transverse bulkheads are insulated and the holds are cooled. The cold air in the holds ensures that the orange juice concentrate, which has already been cooled down, maintains the temperature. The deck is set up for container transport and about the middle of the ship is a small crane for transferring hoses and a manifold for transferring cargo.
Drive and power supply
The variable pitch propeller is driven by a reversible, low-speed two-stroke Sulzer 6 RTA 62 76 M engine with an output of 10,800 kW at 105 rpm. This enables the ship to reach a speed of 19 knots . The engine can also be driven from the bridge via an automatic remote control. Three Mitsubishi auxiliary diesels with a nominal output of 735 kW at 900 rpm are installed to generate electricity and drive three-phase alternators. A shaft generator with 1,580 kVA is also available.
Cargo cooling system
The cargo cooling system consists of an indirect cooling system in which a cold brine in air coolers cools down the cold air circuit in the cargo holds. The cold brine, in turn, is cooled by the evaporators in the refrigeration system. The refrigeration system consists of the refrigerant compressors, which are designed as screw compressors, the condensers for liquefying the refrigerant R22 , the expansion valves and the evaporators . The condensers are cooled with sea water.
