history

Game of Kunlun Red Star against Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg (2016)

On June 25, 2016, in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, an agreement was signed between the KHL and Kunlun Red Star, which enabled the club to join the Russian league. This made the team from Beijing the first Chinese representative in the KHL, which from then on consisted of clubs from eight countries. A corresponding letter of intent had previously been signed between the Russian Ice Hockey Federation , the KHL and Red Star Kunlun in March 2016 .

The first head coach was the Russian Vladimir Jursinov junior , the post of sports director was taken over by his compatriot Vladimir Kretschin. Kunlun played the first competitive game in the Continental Hockey League on September 1, 2016 (2-1 win over Amur Khabarovsk ), while Canadian Sean Collins scored the first goal in the club's history. The KHL home premiere took place five days later, and this game was also won by "Red Star" (6: 3 against Admiral Vladivostok ).

After the 2016/17 season, Mike Keenan was introduced as the new head coach. In May 2017 Richard Gynge was signed by Kunlun Red Star. Due to this obligation, among other things, General Manager Wladimir Kretschin was dismissed a few weeks later and Mike Keenan also took over his post. In November 2017, a new manager was introduced with Raitis Pilsetnieks , while Keenan remained head coach. In the 2017/18 season and at the beginning of the 2018/19 season, the team played their home games in Shanghai at the Feiyang Skating Center . The team was originally scheduled to return to the Cadillac Arena in Beijing in January 2019 . However, the new venues were the Shougang Ice Hockey Arena with 3,000 seats in Beijing and the Universiade Sports Center in Shenzhen with a maximum of 14,000 seats.
