The 2017/18 season was the eleventh season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL), the top Canadian division in women's ice hockey . Last year's winner, Les Canadiennes de Montréal , won the regular season of the CWHL, while the Markham Thunder won the Clarkson Cup for the first time in the club's history .

Due to the hosting of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea , much of the season in previous years took place without the Canadian and US top players as these with their respective hockey associations Hockey Canada or USA Hockey outside of gaming operations in a separate preparation program at the Olympic Hockey Tournament were . After the end of the tournament, Hilary Knight , Brianne Jenner and Laura Fortino , among others, returned to their respective teams.

Attendees

In the summer of 2017, the newly founded women's team of the Chinese KHL club Kunlun Red Star and the Vanke Rays , also from the People's Republic of China, were accepted. In the course of the league expansion, a salary system was introduced for the first time for the players, with the salary per season between 2,000 and 10,000 US dollars and the salary cap at 100,000 US dollars per team. In addition, individual players in the Chinese clubs receive salaries as so-called ice hockey ambassadors , which are well above the normal CWHL salaries.
