Laura Michele Fortino (* the 30th January 1991 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who since 2014 for the Brampton / Markham Thunder in the Canadian Women's Hockey League on the position of the defender plays. Fortino has been a member of the Canadian women's national team since 2011 and is both world and Olympic champion.

Career

Fortino started ice skating at the age of three and came to ice hockey through her two older brothers. In 2004 she took part with the boys team of the Hamilton Reps ( Bantam AA Boys ) in the regional championships of Ontario and took second place there. From 2006 she played with the Stoney Creek Sabers from the Provincial Women's Hockey League , the top women's ice hockey division in the province of Ontario , and finished third with the Sabers in 2007. At the national U18 women's championships in Kitchener in 2007 , she won the gold medal with the Ontario Red team. The following year Fortino won the OWHA Provincial Championship and the PWHL Championship with the Stoney Creek Sabers. Then she reached first place with Ontario Red at the national U18 championships in 2008 in Napanee.

Success at Cornell University

In 2009 she began studying nutritional science at Cornell University in the United States , which she graduated in 2013. In parallel, she played for Cornell Big Red , the university's ice hockey team, in the ECAC hockey . During her first season in 2009/10 she was the top goalscorer of all defenders of the NCAA and reached with her team the final game of the NCAA Frozen Four , which was lost after three extra time. She then received numerous personal awards, including becoming the first ever Big Red student to join the All-American All-Star team and one of the ten finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award .

In 2011 and 2012 she reached the NCAA Frozen Four with Cornell and received numerous other awards. In the 2013/14 season, she took part with the Canadian national team in the centralized Olympic preparation, which included games in the Alberta Midget Hockey League .

Fortino was selected first in the 2014 CWHL Draft by the Brampton Thunder and participated in the first CWHL All-Star Game in 2015. At the end of the 2015/16 season she was named Defender of the Year for the CWHL.

With the Markham Thunder she won the championship trophy of the Canadian Women's Hockey League in the form of the Clarkson Cup at the end of the 2017/18 season .

International

On an international level, Fortino took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2008 , where she won silver with the team, and the U18 World Junior Championship in 2009 . There she also won silver. The striker was first appointed to the Canadian women's national team in 2010. She won the gold medal at the 2012 World Cup , and silver at the 2015 , 2016 and 2017 World Cups . In addition, she was appointed to the all-star team of the tournament in the 2012 world championships .

The attacker celebrated winning the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . Four years later, at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , the Canadian team achieved silver and Fortino was named to the All-Star Team of the Olympic tournament.
