The ice hockey world championships for women under 18 in 2008 was the first time the international ice hockey federation IIHF held the competition in the age group of women under 18 years of age. A total of eight national teams took part in the World Cup between January 7 and 12, 2008 . The venue was the Canadian metropolis of Calgary in the province of Alberta . The games were played in the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena (2,000 seats) and the neighboring Norma Bush Arena .

The world champion was the team from the United States , which defeated arch rivals from Canada 5-2 in the final . The German team finished the tournament in fifth place, Switzerland was seventh and penultimate.

Attendees

The following teams - in addition to the two seeded teams from North America - qualified at qualifying tournaments in 2007 and took part in the first World Cup:

Canada and the USA did not take part in the qualification, but were admitted to the Junior World Cup due to their dominant position in women's ice hockey. Other participants in the qualifying tournaments were Japan, the Netherlands, Austria, Kazakhstan, Slovakia and France.

Originally, Russia had also tried to host the tournament, but withdrew its application because of the tradition of women's ice hockey in Canada.

At the semi-annual IIHF congress in Vancouver in September 2007 it was announced that all participants in the first tournament would automatically take part in the second U18 women’s world championship in 2009. Starting with the 2009 World Cup, a relegation system and Division I will be set up.

After the group games in the preliminary round, the two group winners and runners-up qualified directly for the semi-finals. The third and fourth group played for fifth place.
