Coyne came into contact with ice hockey as a child and played mostly with boys of the same age as a junior. At the age of 15, she was invited to a national team for the first time by the US ice hockey association USA Hockey and then took part in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2008 , 2009 and 2010 . There she won two gold and one silver medal in her three participations. She was also the best goalscorer twice and the best striker once in the competition. During this time she played for the Chicago Mission junior team and, at the age of 17, was invited to prepare for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . In the end, however, she was not nominated and then went to the Berkshire School in Sheffield , Massachusetts in the summer of 2010 . At the 2011 World Cup , the attacker was part of the US national team for the first time and won her first world title. It had already made its debut at the 4 Nations Cup 2010 .

In the summer of 2011, Coyne received a scholarship from Northeastern University in Boston , where she graduated in Communication and Business in 2016 . During this time she played parallel to her studies for the university team in the Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Initially, she was active for Northeastern University until the summer of 2013 and was able to add another gold and silver medal at world championships to her collection of medals. She then left university and joined USA Hockey to prepare intensively for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . There the Americans won the silver medal.

For the 2014/15 school year, Coyne returned to college gaming. In addition, she celebrated her third win of the World Cup title at the 2015 World Cup . In her final year at Northeastern University, the striker surpassed all previous years with 84 points in 37 games and received the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award for best college player in the United States at the end of the season . Shortly afterwards, the fourth World Cup win followed at the 2016 World Cup.

After completing her studies, the American switched to the professional field. However, instead of switching to one of the major North American leagues, she joined the non-league Minnesota Whitecaps in the summer of 2016 , which only played friendly games against teams from NCAA universities and high schools . Still, Coyne was the dominant player at the 2017 World Cup . As top scorer, top scorer and member of the All-Star-Team, she led the US team to win the gold medal again. For the 2017/18 season she returned to USA Hockey again to start preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . It was there that she eventually won Olympic gold.

On January 25, 2019, Coyne Schofield made ice hockey history when she became the first woman to take part in the All-Star SkillsCompetition at the SAP Center in San José , California, before the NHL All-Star Game .
