The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) is the top women's ice hockey division in the United States , is one of the best women's ice hockey leagues in the world and calls itself the only (women's) professional league in the world. The league was founded in 2015 and consisted of four teams for the first three years before the league was expanded by one team. The NWHL champion receives the Isobel Cup as a trophy named after Lady Isobel Gathorne-Hardy, daughter of Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby .

In 2015, a Winter Classic for women ( Outdoor Women's Classic ) took place for the first time , in which - one day before the NHL Winter Classic 2016 - the Boston Pride from the National Women's Hockey League and the Les Canadiennes de Montréal from the Canadian Women's Hockey League faced.
