Abbe Lane (* 14. December 1932 in New York City , New York , as Abigail Francine Lassman ) is an American actress and singer . She gained fame through her collaboration with band leader Xavier Cugat , with whom she was married from 1952 to 1964. Lane released 6 studio albums in her career as a singer, which lasted until 1980. As an actress, she appeared in both American and Italian film productions and, from the 1960s, increasingly in guest appearances in well-known television series.

Life

Abigail Francine Lassman was born on December 14, 1932 in Brooklyn , New York. She began her career as a child in radio pieces before she went to Broadway as a singer and dancer . In 1949 Lane got her first small film role in the Italian romantic comedy Nur You Are My Dream . In the same year she was discovered during an appearance on The Vincent Lopez Show by band leader Xavier Cugat, who was enthusiastic about her voice and made her the singer of his orchestra.

In 1952, Lane married Xavier Cugat, with whom she remained together until the divorce in 1964, which was accompanied by great media attention. During this time Lane achieved her greatest successes in the theater and was henceforth to be seen in major film roles in American and Italian productions. In 1955 she played the leading female role in the film noir Die Große Masche . In the Italian love comedy Junge Liebe in Rome with Elsa Martinelli and Gabriele Ferzetti , which appeared in 1956 , she made a cameo as herself.

In 1963 Lane was seen in a supporting role with Cugat in the German production Das Feuerschiff . She also appeared on various talk and television shows with her husband , including the 1958 What's my line? ( What am I? ). Even after her separation from Xavier Cugat, Lane appeared in various shows, including as a show act in a total of four episodes of The Tonight Show in 1962 and in another episode of What's my line? .

In addition to her film career, Lane continued to appear on Broadway. In 1958 she played alongside Tony Randall in the musical Oh, Captain! .

In addition to her vocal appearances in musicals, Lane also recorded several Latin American pieces and albums on RCA Records and Mercury Records since 1957 . Her most commercially successful work was the 1958 album Be Mine Tonight , a collaboration with Tito Puente . In 1980, a disco album entitled Rainbows was released only with her first name , which was also her last release as a singer.

Lane continued to appear in several films and television series even after her marriage to Cugat. In 1983 she had her last film role in Unheimliche Schattenlichter , followed by a guest appearance on an episode of Hart But Warmth that same year. Lane retired from acting after a guest appearance on Incredible Stories .

Abbe Lane received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her achievements in television . She lives in Los Angeles with her second husband Perry Leff . The couple has been married since 1964 and has two children together. In 1993 Lane's book But Where is Love? , a novel with autobiographical features.
