Buckler's Hard

Buckler's Hard is a hamlet in the English county of Hampshire , located on the Beaulieu River , about 4 km south of Beaulieu (Hampshire) . It belongs to the 9000 km² Beaulieu Estate .

history

The place founded by John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu as Montagu Town was intended as a port for trade with the West Indies . The favorable location of the place encouraged the creation of a shipyard . The river, which is protected from the sea, could be navigated by larger ships, its gravel bank had enough stability to support the building docks for shipbuilding and launching. The wood needed to build the ships could be obtained from the nearby New Forest .

Shipbuilding at Buckler's Hard began in the early 18th century and gained national importance under Henry Adams in 1744 . Shortly after founding his own shipyard in Buckler's Hard, Adams secured a number of orders from the Royal Navy . He oversaw the construction of 43 Royal Navy ships in his Buckler's Hard shipyard for the next 60 years, including the HMS Euryalus , HMS Swiftsure and HMS Agamemnon , which were used in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar .

In the 19th century the importance of shipbuilding declined. Motor torpedo boats were built in Buckler's Hard during World War II , and the river berthed hundreds of landing craft for Operation Overlord to invade Normandy.

Today tourism plays the biggest role for Buckler's Hard. There is a small marine museum and a modern marina . Buckler's Hard was starting and finishing point for the one-handed - circumnavigation of Francis Chichester 1966/1967 in his yacht Gipsy Moth IV .
