NGC 6492 is an 11.8 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Peacock in the southern sky . It is an estimated 189 million light years from the Milky Way and about 145,000 light years in diameter.
The Type Ia supernova SN 2004fv was observed here.
The object was discovered on July 22, 1835 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, which displayed “pF, S, pmE, in direction of the parallel; precedes a star 12m, which is all but involved ”noted.
