NGC 6502 is a 12.6 likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Peacock on southern sky . It is an estimated 241 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years in diameter .

The object was discovered on June 20, 1835 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, which during two observations "vF, 30 arcseconds, involves 2 or 3 stars" and "the following star (14m) of a vF double star 11m is nebulous. The nebula is excessively faint, but I am sure of its existence. The preceding star is free ”noted.
