NGC 6517 is a globular cluster located 37,800 light years away in the constellation of the Serpent Bearer .
The star cluster was discovered on June 16, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7 inch telescope and was later included in his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
