NGC 6497 = NGC 6498 is a 13.4 mag bright bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation of Dragon in the northern sky . It is an estimated 350 million light years from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxy NGC 6489 is located in the same area of the sky .

The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on September 16, 1884 . Swift noted in this observation "close s of middle * of 3 in a line, middle * the fainter". On the basis of his notes “B * nr; F * v nr. ”In the following observation on September 26, 1884, despite the almost identical position information, the second entry in the catalog was made under NGC 6498 .
