NGC 6486 is a compact elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is an estimated 368 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 6487 , it forms an (optical?) Pair of galaxies.
The object was discovered on July 28, 1880 by Édouard Stephan .
