NGC 6509 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBcd in the constellation Serpent Bearer north of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 87 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter . Together with PGC 61214 and PGC 61300 , it forms the small galaxy group LGG 416 .
The object was discovered on July 20, 1879 by Édouard Stephan .
