NGC 6493 is a 14.5 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Dragon in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 274 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years across . Together with NGC 6491 , it forms an (optical?) Pair of galaxies. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6488 and IC 4669 .
The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on July 5, 1885 .
