NGC 6504 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type S in the constellation Hercules at the northern sky . It is an estimated 222 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter .
The object was discovered on July 27, 1864 by the astronomer Albert Marth with the help of his 48-inch mirror telescope and was later included in his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
